
Jerilyn has been playing handbells since 1981 when she convinced her congregation to purchase a set of handbells. The Bells of Ascension at Ascension Lutheran Church in South Burlington, Vermont has been an active group ever since, and she has continued as director throughout the 22 year history. Last year a community handbell group was formed in the Burlington area, and Jerilyn was asked to direct the group. Jerilyn has also been actively involved in Area I as well as Vermont handbell activities; serving as local liaison for the Area I Festival Conference in Burlington, Vt. and also serving as Chair of the Area I Festival Conference in 2001.
When Jerilyn was 15 years old she became the church organist in our small congregation in a farming community on the prairie in Minnesota and have been involved in church music ever since. She attended St. Olaf college and received my B.S. degree in medical technology from the University of Minnesota. She also attained an M.S. degree in Plant and Soil Science as well as an MEd in Professional Education and Curriculum Development from the University of Vermont. Jerilyn is currently teaching honors chemistry and biology at Rice Memorial High School in South Burlington, Vermont. Her family includes: husband of 36 years, Dale, a professor at the University of Vermont; daughter Dr. Tawnya Kiernan, her husband Michael and granddaughters Leila, 7 and Emily, 6 years old; and son, Aaron, his wife, Miska and grandson Eljas, 1 year old, who all live in Finland where Aaron attends graduate school.
